The Manila Bulletin dominated this year’s La Sallian Scholarum Awards in journalism.

Three major awards were bagged by the Manila Bulletin: The Outstanding Feature Story on Youth and Education by Rachel Barawid; the Outstanding Published Photograph on Youth and Education by Mark Balmores; and the Outstanding Published feature Article on De La Salle University by Ronald Lim.

With “Make your Mark” as this year’s theme, the awards were presented to the winners on Friday.

The Lasallian Scholarum Awards is an annual project of the De La Salle University (DLSU), honoring the country’s outstanding print, photo, broadcast, and campus journalists for their remarkable reportage on various youth and education issues.

Barawid’s “Pinoy in thoughts, in words - and in games!” was recognized for her excellent story on the preservation of traditional street games and its impact on the cultural and holistic development of the Filipino child. Her another story, “No Boundaries,” is also among the finalists along with Angelo Garcia of Manila Bulletin for “Education Seeks To Sustain Growth After Year Of Crises;” Tricia Morento of Metro Magazine for “Sunny side up;” Santiago R. Alcantara of Philippine Daily Inquirer for “Planting Rice is fun: Farming 101 taught in Cainta High School;” Vincent Cabreza of Philippine Daily Inquirer for “Ibaloi People Ponder Future Together;” Stef Juan of Metro Magazine for “Steady On;” Maricar Cinco of Philippine Daily Inquirer for “Teachers Convert Homes To Schools;” Chito A. Fuentes of Philippine Daily Inquirer for “'Smart start' For Kids In Daycare Centers,” and Walter Ang of Philippine Daily Inquirer for “In This Garage-Based School, 'Bulilits' Are 'Iskolars'”

The winning photo of Balmores “Danger of Free Rides” captured the vivid range of colors, a split-second image of a youth’s desire to learn despite great difficulty. A special citation was given to Joy Torrejos’ “Boy Flees From Fire” from The Philippine Star for her poignant photograph of a child escaping from fire.

Other finalists include Ali Vicoy of Manila Bulletin for “Croc Park,” Maricar P. Cinco of Philippine Daily Inquirer for “Home Schooling,” Harold Orara of Manila Bulletin for “Papa Jesus' Girl,” JonJon Vicencio of the The Philippine Star for “Breastfeeding,” Noel Celis of Manila Bulletin for “State of Calamity,” Joan Bondoc of Philippine Daily Inquirer for “Muddy Trek,” Elmer Kristian Dauigoy of Philippine Daily Inquirer for “Waterworld Up North,” and Raffy Lerma of Philippine Daily Inquirer for “Mud and Derbis.”

Karen Davila’s The Correspondents (ABS CBN) episode on youth in sports, entitled Batang Bida, was chosen outstanding television feature for its optimism and for championing youth development.

Other finalists included Adrian Ayalin of ABS-CBN 2 - The Correspondent for “Huwag Salingin Ang Sining” and “Ang Pangarap Kong Bahay Sa Pasko,” Kara David of GMA 7 - I-Witness for “Tulong Kay Bunso,” Jay Taruc of GMA 7 - I-Witness for “Locked Down: Selda Diyes,” Korina Sanchez of ABS-CBN 2 - Rated K for “Putik Painter,” and Sandra Aguinaldo of GMA 7 - I-Witness for “Lasengga.”

Top award for feature article in a school organ went to Stephanie Bagulbagul and Maria Paola Margarita Siasoco of The Scholastican, St. Scholastica's College Manila, for their article “Silent war: Human rights violations in the Philippines.“

Manila Bulletin’s Ronald Lim won outstanding feature story on De La Salle University for his feature on Sikat, the country’s second solar car,

which was made by DLSU students. Lim’s vivid narrative of the grueling experiences of a group of engineering students in building the country’s second solar car made it stand out among selected stories on DLSU.

Other finalists included the 60 Minutes section of Manila Bulletin of Rachel C. Barawid, Ronald S. Lim, Ina H. Malipot, Jaser A. Marasigan, and Ivy Lisa Mendoza for “DLSU president Br. Armin A. Luistro: Oh Brother!” Leo Angelo Gomez Cabasag of Manila Bulletin for “One great Sunday for the kids,” Patricia Esteves of The Philippine Star for “'Man for others' transcends color,” Rizal Raoul Reyes of “DLSU to raise P1B for centennial.”

This year’s board of judges is composed of the co-founder of the Philippine Center for Investigative Journalism and Newsbreak advisory board member Marites Vitug; Knowledge Channel Foundation, Inc. president Rina Lopez-Bautista; executive director of De La Salle University’s Office for Strategic Communication, Ayi Magpayo; KIDS Foundation founder and TV personality Diether Ocampo, and BBC News business anchor Rico

Hizon, who serves as this year's chair of the Board of Judges.

The Scholarum Awards, which is now on its seventh year, aims to encourage journalists to generate intelligent discussion of timely youth and education topics.

The Lasallian Scholarum Awards is an annual ceremony recognizing outstanding media coverage of Filipino youth and education issues by print, photo, broadcast, and campus journalists.

Sponsored by the Marketing Communication Office of De La Salle University, the campaign aims to generate awareness among various sectors, from government and non-government organizations to private companies and individuals on critical issues confronting the education sector. This endeavor encourages them to make proactive initiatives toward the development of the country's educational system.

The Lasallian Scholarum Awards is open to print, photo, broadcast and campus journalists. There are five categories.

The first and second categories are published feature article and photograph on youth and education for nationally circulated publications.

The third category is televised feature story on youth and education while the fourth special category is a feature story on De La Salle University.

The fifth category is for published article on youth and education in a school organ.
