“’DI ko na nakilala ang Baseco dahil dati, ’pag nagpupunta ako dito, ang natatapakan ko ay bato o putik. Galing talaga ni Mayor Lim. Pero mas magaling ang mga taga-Maynila dahil si Mayor Lim ang ibinoto nila,” thus beamed President Benigno Simeon “Noynoy” Aquino III as he praised Manila Mayor Alfredo S. Lim during the launching of the PhilHealth cards registration program at the President Corazon Aquino High School in Baseco, Port Area, Manila.
President Benigno Simeon ‘Noynoy’ Aquino III and Manila Mayor Alfredo S. Lim yesterday swapped praises during the launching of the government’s Philhealth cards registration program at the President Corazon Aquino High School in Baseco, Port Area.
Aquino, in his speech, lauded the improvements effected by Lim in the area for the benefit of the residents, among them the concreting of the roads there.
President Aquino further elicited reaction from the audience when he asked: “Ano ba ang gusto n`yo, semento o bulaklak?” to which the crowd chorused, “semento!”
“Mas maganda semento, tapos sa gilid na lang ’yung bulaklak,” President Aquino smilingly told the crowd which comprised of city officials and residents of Baseco, both young and old.
For his part, Lim said the wrong impression being created by President Aquino’s detractors that he (Aquino) is an elitist has been proven wrong once more in Baseco.
Lim said that aside from ensuring the health of every Filipino especially the poor through the continuous distribution of health cards, President Aquino has also directed him to prioritize education especially for the indigents.
“Si President Aquino ang nag-utos sa akin na ipatayo ang dalawang high school building na ito para sa mahihirap na taga-Baseco. Sa pamamagitan ng mga ganitong proyekto ay ipinakikita ni Presidente Aquino ang kanyang pagmamahal at tunay na pagkalinga sa mga mahihirap, hindi sa salita kundi sa nakikita ng mga mata” Lim stressed.
Aside from the two three-storey high school buildings which both house 14 classrooms each, Lim has also built within the vicinity a huge playground complete with modern facilities, a fully air-conditioned health and lying-in center and a public market, all named after the late President Cory Aquino.
From the school, Lim accompanied President Aquino in paying a visit to the health center and then proceeded to the statue of President Cory Aquino in front of the school.
An elementary school building is slated to be built beside the high school buildings within the year.
Along with some of his cabinet secretaries, Aquino, assisted by Lim, personally distributed PhilHealth cards to 50 of the 500 recipients scheduled to be given said cards.
Among those present were Social Welfare Secretary Dinky Soliman, Health Secretary Enrique Ona and Education Secretary Armin Luistro.
