Imelda expects to join UN Summit on MDGs 2gtb4h10

BATAC, Philippines – Ilocos Norte 2nd District Rep. Imelda Marcos said on Saturday that she is not sure if Congress will pick her to represent the country at a United Nations summit in New York City later this month.

She said House Speaker Feliciano Belmonte Jr. has not informed lawmakers on who will attend the UN Summit on Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) to be held on September 20-22.

Marcos chairs a special congressional committee tasked to oversee the implementation of 8 MDGs that all UN member-states, including the Philippines, agreed to achieve by the year 2015.

The goals include reducing extreme poverty, reducing child mortality rates, fighting disease epidemics such as AIDS, and developing a global partnership for development.

Despite the lack of word from Belmonte, Marcos seems to be sure of being sent to the UN gathering.

At the program celebrating the 93rd birthday of her late husband, strongman Ferdinand Marcos, the Ilocos lawmaker said she expects to leave for the summit in the next couple of days.

UN coordinator to the Philippines Jacqueline Badcock said the world body will welcome Marcos’ presence at the summit. – with a report from Hadji Rieta, ABS-CBN Ilocos
