NCAA Player of the Week: Garvo Lanete (San Beda)

San Beda gunner Garvo Lanete has started to have the penchant for hitting the big shots.

With the game on the line, the sweet-shooting Lanete came through again and drilled in eight of his 23 points in the crucial stretches of the fourth quarter to help the Lions turn back the San Sebastian Stags, 90-82, Wednesday.

The win completed the roaring the Lions a historic 16-game sweep of the double-round elimination—the first since the Stags accomplished the feat in 12 games 13 seasons back—while nailing it an outright berth in the finals where the former would need just two wins to arrange a date with history.

It proved also enough to gain Lanete his third NCAA Press Corps ACCEL/Fil-Oil Player of the Week award supported by Terrilicious meat products and Gatorade and given by the country’s sportswriters covering the oldest and one of the most prestigious leagues in the land today.

The 21-year-old, fourth year guard, who boasts of a personal season high 30 points in one of his earlier games including a 13-point splurge, edged teammate, American behemoth Sudan Daniel, to the punch to snatch the weekly honors.

The slam-dunking 6-7 Daniel piled up equally impressive statistics with 23 points, 11 boards and five shot blocks.

In the end though, it was Lanete’s clutch shooting that spelled the difference.

“He (Lanete) is really a clutch shooter. He made some big shots again for us and he’s starting to make a habit of it,” said San Beda coach Frankie Lim, who is also team manager of Guangzhou Asian Games-bound Smart Gilas Pilipinas.
