NATIONAL University ended Ateneo’s two-year reign in the Philippine Unigames after the Bulldogs pulled off a stunning 66-53 win yesterday in their semifinals showdown at the Lamberto Macias Sports Center in Dumaguete City.

The Bulldogs will meet Adamson Falcons for the basketball title of the meet as the Falcons also scored a shocking 72-62 victory against Far Eastern University in the other Final Four pairing involving two other UAAP teams.

The title showdown was unexpected as both the Blue Eagles and Tamaraws were expected to advance in a repeat of their UAAP Finals clash which Ateneo won via a two-game sweep.

With Joey Guanio calling the shots, the Bulldogs banked on the solid performance by Jewel Ponferrada, national youth standouts Bobby Ray Parks, Kyle Neypes and Cedric Labing-isa to post the tournament’s biggest stunner.

They also won despite getting only two points from Cameroonian center Emmanuel Mbe, runner-up to FEU guard RR Garcia in the UAAP MVP race.
