Adamson Routs NU In V-League

Known for its strong set attack, Adamson University showed it can also play tough defense as it bludgeoned National University, 25-17, 25-19, 25-21, in the 7th Shakey's V-League second conference Sunday at The Arena in San Juan City.

Flaunting a solid net defense and impeccable floor reception, the Lady Falcons neutralized the Lady Bulldogs' hitters en route to a big win. NU’s top guns were held single digit outputs as a result of their pesky hard-nosed defense.

Mervic Mangui, 19, who fired 26 hits in NU’s debut victory over College St. Benilde last week, was limited to a dismal seven points.

With the win, the Lady Falcons redeemed themselves from a shock five-set defeat to newcomer Perpetual Help a few days ago.

The Lady Falcons also made life miserable for Maricar Nepomuceno and Elaine Sagun, who only made five and eight points, respectively, a far cry from their 20 and 16 hit-performance during their debut match.

Adamson's defense was so tough that NU managed to convert only 25 attacks from 105 attempts, while committing 23 errors.

While the rest of the team focused on defense, Paulina Soriano and Angela Benting took charge of the scoring, firing 14 and 12 points underscored by four aces and 11 kills as the Dulce Pante-mentored Lady Falcons overwhelmed the Lady Bulldogs in only 64 minutes.

Gail Martin made a good account of herself by churning out 10 points while guest players Nerissa Bautista and Michelle Laborte had eight points each as Adamson, the 2008 second conference champion, secured a share of the third place with its victim, Perpetual Help and Lyceum on similar 1-1 cards.
