Can anyone stop Far Eastern University at this point of the 73rd UAAP basketball tournament?
The league-leading Tamaraws are currently proving why pundits picked them the team to beat this season as they remained unbeaten after six games in the league’s first round of hostilities.
FEU kept its unbeaten slate on Sunday after toppling Adamson, 64-55, in a game that saw the defense-minded Tams leaning on a strong offensive production, firing 57 percent from the field.
Aside from that, it seems that coach Glenn Capacio has been getting significant help from almost everyone, especially ace guard RR Garcia, the UAAP Press Corps Player of the Week, Smart Gilas-RP team standout Aldrech Ramos and Reil Cervantes.
Also contributing in recent games are Cameroonian Pipo Noundou, rookie Terrence Romeo, Jens Knuttel and seldom-used big man Carl Bryan Cruz, who had 16 points in FEU’s remarkable 84-80 double overtime win over De La Salle on Thursday.
“Yun ang maganda sa team ngayon dahil halos lahat nakakapag- contribute,” said Capacio.
“Kung magtuloy-tuloy lang mas malalim pa yung rotation namin pagdating ng second round.”
Although the Tams are one win away from completing a seven-game sweep of the first round, Capacio hopes to see more consistency from his team, particularly on defense.
“Siguro ang kulang pa sa amin is yung consistency lalo na sa defense,” he said.
Garcia, the team’s top scorer at 17 points per game, agrees with his mentor.
“Yun nga siguro ang kulang pa sa amin, yung minsan may mga lapses kami,” said Garcia, who is also averaging 3.7 rebounds and 2.8 assists this season making him the frontrunner for the league’s Most Valuable Player award.
FEU completes its first round assignment on Saturday against University of Santo Tomas at The Arena in San Juan.
