Manila, Philippines - The Adamson Falcons took their cue from this season’s theme: UAAP… where Heroes are made.
True enough, the Falcons, who are soaring to new heights this season, have seen a lot of heroes rising from their squad.
Two of them delivered the big shots that mattered most as the Falcons opened the second round with two straight victories and now in solo second at 7-2.
Eric Camson and Janus Lozada rose to the occasion dishing out clutch performances that may erase the stigma of being the heartbreak kids last season.
"I think slowly we're maturing as a team. This is our biggest statement," said Adamson coach Leo Austria. "In the past, we've had criticisms that we always collapse in the end game. But I think those experiences helped us a lot."
Camson, who had his share of endgame boo boos back in his rookie year last season, made the biggest basket of his young career when he scored the game-winning tip-in that gave the Falcons a 64-63 upset of erstwhile unbeaten Far Eastern University Tamaraws.
The win was the San Marcelino-based squad’s first against FEU since 2002.
Three days later, it was Lozada’s turn to be the hero.
The veteran forward knocked down a career-high 19 points, including the three-pointer that forced the second extra period in Adamson’s 81-76 double overtime squeaker against the University of Sto. Tomas Growling Tigers.
Lozada fired the crucial triple in the last 3.8 seconds of the first overtime to knot the count at 70-all.
"I just have to hail our players. They refused to lose and they won't give up," said Austria. "It's important for us that we develop our character. We'll need it in the playoffs."
Those twin heroics made Camson and Lozada as the Accel-Filoil UAAP Press Corps Players of the Week.
Camson and Lozada won the weekly citation presented by Gatorade and Terrilicious over Ateneo's Emman Monfort and Far Eastern University's RR Garcia.
Camson averaged 12.5 points and 8.5 rebounds, while Lozada had 13.5 points and 4.5 rebounds in last week's thrilling triumphs.
