s Carmelo Anthony leaning towards donning a red-and-white jersey next season with the Rockets?
Rumors of Anthony thinking twice to agree to a three-year, $65-million extension with the Denver Nuggets have emerged, weeks after his fellow superstar and NBA Rookie Batch 2003 classmate LeBron James stirred controversy by deciding to suit for Miami.
Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo! Sports writes that “Nuggets executive Josh Kroenke (son of the franchise’s owner) met with Carmelo Anthony in Baltimore over the weekend and restarted the process of selling the disgruntled star on signing a contract extension, according to league sources.”
The buzz was fueled by speculations that the All-Star forward is reportedly eyeing to join forces with center Amare Stoudemire and New Orleans’ star point guard Chris Paul in Phoenix next season after Paul made a toast during Anthony’s wedding last July 10 — their own version of the “Big Three.”
However, unnamed sources noted by Wojnarowski claim that Anthony has been “showing more enthusiasm over joining the Houston Rockets than the Knicks.”
“Anthony still believes he can get the maximum possible money from re-signing with the Nuggets now, sources said, with his sights on engineering a trade to a preferred destination later,” Wojnarowski notes.
“For him to opt out of his contract at the end of next season would be an immense risk. With league owners determined to shorten the years and lessen the money on max contracts in the next collective bargaining agreement, Anthony and his representatives know they could cost themselves tens of millions of guaranteed dollars.”
