MANILA, Philippines – (UPDATE) Far Eastern University secured the no.1 spot after nipping defending champion Ateneo, 74-72, Saturday in the 73rd UAAP men's basketball tournament
at the Araneta Coliseum.
Top MVP candidate RR Garcia came through in the clutch once again as he sank the go-ahead triple, 73-72 with 42.6 ticks left to give the lead for good to the Tamaraws, who achieved their best elimination round finish at 12-2 since 2005 where they last bagged the title.
Ateneo, with all the momentum on its side, looked well on the way of claiming the top spot after building a 72-66 gap on a three-pointer by Eric Salamat with only 3:25 left.
However, that marked the last basket the Eagles would make as the Tamaraws raced to an 8-0 run capped by Reil Cervantes' split on the charity stripe with 20.1 ticks remaining that set the final count.
With the win, the Tamaraws will take on the no.4 seed Green Archers on Thursday (September 16) at 3:30 p.m. while the other Final Four match between Ateneo and no. 3 Adamson will be played on Sunday (September 19) also at 3:30 p.m.
