Perpetual Help came out impressive enough yesterday to bring home its second NCAA cheerleading title before a huge crowd at The Arena in San Juan City.
The Perps survived minor mistakes in their execution of the pyramid routine by doing their best in the basic elements like tumbling and tosses to survive the challenge put up by one of the toughest fields in years.
Perpetual Help amassed 300 points, besting Mapua and 2008 champion Jose Rizal to pocket the top purse worth P100,000 and the title as the best there is in the league.
The Cheerping Cardinals fared a little better in the pyramid routine but couldn’t get enough points to dethrone the Perps as the former finished second with 290.5 points while Bombers wound up at close third place with 289.5 points to take home P60,000 and P50,000, respectively.
“We know we did well but we made some minor mistakes in our pyramid routine because it was really a difficult one,” said Ruf Valdolph Rosario, Perpetual Help’s coach.
“I’m so happy that we were able to win the title once again for Perpetual Help and I want to thank the students and the school for supporting us again,” he added.
It was the second title for Perpetual Help, which will happen to host the league next season, after emerging triumphant in the Fil-Oil/Flying V Pre-season cheering competitions last June.
Overall, the Perps reigned for the fifth straight time including three when the event was still called a cheerdance event.
San Sebastian finished fourth with 275 and Emilio Aguinaldo fifth with 268 while Letran (267), Arellano U (246.5), St. Benilde (239.5) and San Beda (166.5) rounded up the top nine.
The event was organized by Jose Rizal through its Management Committee member Paul Supan.
