The Department of Education said classes today in all public elementary and secondary schools will be suspended to give teachers who served as members of the Board of Elections Tellers time to rest.

For schools where elections will be held today, classes are suspended Wednesday.

Some 490,000 teachers serve as BET members.

In a related development, Education Secretary Armin Luistro said teacher Juanita Pagaragan, 62, of Mabusag Napu Elementary School in Badoc, Ilocos Norte, died due to injuries after being run over by a cargo truck on her way to get election materials.

In Zamboanga Del Sur, two BET members, Josephine Tindoc and Rosalina Vera Cruz, met an accident while aboard a motorcycle on the way to the polling precinct from the municipal Comelec office.

Several teachers in Lapu-Lapu City in Cebu reported receiving death threats, prompting the DepEd to request additional security personnel from the PNP and the AFP.
