LAS VEGAS (2010 FIBA World Championship) - Team USA’s training camp in Las Vegas gets underway on Monday and all three new additions to the squad will be there.
With all of the Olympic champions from Beijing unavailable for national team duty this summer, USA Basketball added Boston Celtics playmaker Rajon Rondo, Phoenix Suns big man Robin Lopez and Dallas Mavericks power forward/center Tyson Chandler to the group.
“We’re continuing to build our national team roster which will be relied on to select players for teams that will represent the United States in international competitions over the next three summers, including the World Championship team that will compete later this summer,” said USA Basketball chairman Jerry Colangelo.
“Tyson, Robin and Rajon are outstanding additions to the national team and they help give us the talent and depth required in making sure we field the very best USA Basketball teams possible.”
Dan Majerle, an assistant coach with Phoenix, says Lopez has a great opportunity.
"Robin really improved greatly this year and I expect him to keep improving," Majerle said.
Team USA will play in Group B against Slovenia, Brazil, Croatia, Iran and Tunisia.
The United States won the bronze medal at the 2006 FIBA World Championship in Japan.
The last gold they won in the competition was in 1994, when the event was staged in Canada.
