Rachel Ann Daquis just showed why two German volleyball teams are scrambling to get her as one of their “imports.”
The 5-foot-9 Daquis, one of the most popular players in the country, came through with a game-high 16 points to power Far Eastern University to a 25-19, 25-22, 25-16 triumph over Adamson University in the 7th Shakey's V-League second conference Sunday at The Arena in San Juan.
Daquis, who plans to join either GFL Hannover or SC Langenhagen later this year, highlighted her performance with 14 kills as the Lady Tamaraws notched their second straight win for an even 2-2 card and joined their victim and Lyceum in a three-way tie for fourth.
An FEU business management graduate, the 22-year-old Daquis got the attention of the two German clubs when she went to Hannover, Germany to visit her family last February. While there she tried out and trained with the two teams.
Fellow guest player Michelle Carolino backed Daquis with 14 points spiked by an ace as the Lady Tamaraws, who finished third in this same conference last year, remained in contention for a seat in the quarterfinals of the event backed by Accel, Mikasa and Excelroof.
With Daquis and Bautista coming with thunderous spikes, the Lady Tamaraws dictated the tempo to secure the win in a little over an hour.
FEU underscored its dominance by leading in almost all departments – 8-5 in block and 5-1, in service aces.
Former MVP Nerissa Bautista had only 10 kills this time as she struggled in the face of FEU’s tough defense.
San Sebastian-Excelroof continued to lord it over the field with a 4-0 card, beating Perpetual Help, 27-25, 25-21, 25-18, also last Sunday to move a win away from formalizing its stint in the next round of the season-ending conference sponsored by Shakey’s Pizza.
