PAGBILAO, Quezon/CAMP CRAME, Quezon City – At least five people were killed and 39 others injured when a Manila-bound bus careened off the road and rolled down into a creek in Pagbilao, Quezon, a police official said.

The Police Provincial Office (PPO) identified one of the fatalities as Milagros Lerio, 63, who died on the spot.

Senior Superintendent Agrimero Cruz, Jr., spokesman of the Philippine National Police (PNP), said the four other passengers who died have yet to be identified.

But Chief Inspector Laudemier Llaneta, Pagbilao chief of police, said four of the fatalities were female and one was male.

Their remains were taken to the Betty Funeral Parlor in Pagdilao.

The driver, identified by Cruz as Oscar Pedrigosa, was among the injured.

A separate report from the Pagbilao Police Station placed the number of injured at 46, said Llaneta.

Cruz said the provincial bus, which came from Tacloban City, was traveling along the Bicol Diversion Road in Sitio Amao, Barangay Silangan Malicboy around 2:30 a.m. when the vehicle suddenly
lost its brakes.

The bus was on its way to its terminal in Cubao, Quezon City.

“As a result, the bus fell in a ravine then into a creek,” said Cruz, quoting reports from the field.

Local residents and motorists, along with local rescue teams, immediately proceeded to the area to assist the victims.

Llaneta said some of those injured were stuck inside the bus for more than seven hours before rescuers, with the use of a payloader and wrecker, managed to free them from the wreckage.

The injured were rushed to the Jane Country Hospital in Pagbilao and the MMG General Hospital in Lucena City.
