MANILA, Philippines (Xinhua) - The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) is not discounting the "possibility" that Typhoon Megi may make a U- turn back to the Philippines, a high Pagasa official said on Tuesday.

Pagasa Officer-in-Charge Graciano Yumul Jr. made the statement in a Palace news briefing, when asked about the possible implication of the presence of obstructions along the typhoon's path two high pressure areas which has kept it from completely leaving the Philippine area of responsibility.

"There's a possibility that the typhoon would return. There is always this kind of possibility and that is the reason why every hour on the hour, we are monitoring the typhoon," Yumul said.

He said that there are two high pressure ridges along the typhoon's path, which has kept Typhoon Megi in a "quasi-stationary " state.

"Because of this quasi-stationary state, is it possible for it to return? When it comes to this typhoon, anything is possible," Yumul said.

He assured the public that if there is any indication that such a situation would happen, they would be immediately informed about it.

Meanwhile, National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council said the death toll from super typhoon Megi, the strongest typhoon to hit the Philippines in the last four years, continues to rise with ten people now dead.
