Shooter Lim Wei, a 6-2 Malaysian-Chinese who played in the Penang Basketball Association in Malaysia, will beef up Emilio Aguinaldo College when the Generals troop to the battlefield in the 86th NCAA basketball wars starting June 26.
The arrival of Wei, described as a wily guard, has brought the number of imports competing in the country’s oldest league to four.
The three others are last year’s top rookie American Sudan Daniel of last year's runner up San Beda College and Cameroonians Joe Etame and John Nchotu Njei of Jose Rizal University.
A deadly sniper from beyond the arc, Wei is expected to be an important piece in the Generals’ quest to snare their first ever NCAA title after playing as a guest team last year.
“He is new to the team but he’s a reliable shooter from the three-point line. Given more time he'll be a threat to every team,” said Generals coach Nomar Isla of the third year HRM student.
Recruited through the help of Rizal Technological University coach Beaujing Acot, Wei was a late addition to the team, replacing his friend, 6-foot-10 Lou Chee Hou, another Malaysian-Chinese, in the official NCAA lineup submitted last week. Hou has been put on stand-by and is slated to showcase his wares next season.
Coupled with his almost intact roster, Isla is upbeat about his team’s chances.
The Generals struggled last season and finished seventh (6-12 record) because he said his squad lacked manpower and preparation.
Aside from retaining the services of Philippine Basketball League veteran Claude Cubo and point guard Argel Mendoza, the top rebounder and scorer last season, Isla was able to tab new recruits in Milan Vargas, John Jamon, John Dominique Monteclaros, Jeff Dapitan and former University of Santo Tomas Tiger Dylan Vargas.
