Make way for the Perpetual Help Dolphins, err, Altas.
The Altas have suddenly found themselves bolstered by the inclusion of former stalwarts from Philippine Christian University -- George Allen, Marlon Gomez, Jaycee Asuncion, Harold Sumera and Jett Vidal.
These players now have a new home in the Altas of coach Boris Aldeguer, who is tasked to change the complexion of the team that finished ninth place to a more decent stint, this time, with his new acquisitions.
The inclusion of these five players proved to be a blessing in disguise for Aldeguer.
Not only did it make up for the loss of nine players from his last year’s roster, the young coach was also good enough to get instant veteran players who will join holdovers Chrisper Elopre, Jayson Salvado and Raffy Ynion.
“Undoubtedly, the top three schools which will most likely enter the semis are San Sebastian, San Beda, Jose Rizal and most likely, Perpetual," said multi-titled college coach Louie Alas of Letran.
Alas’ comments didn’t come from home. His observation was valid enough that once he looks at the lineup of the Altas, they now have the tools to compete for the last berth to the Final Four.
“They benefited from the departure of PCU as they were able to acquire their key players," added Alas.
Even Nomar Isla of Emilio Aguinaldo College counts Perpetual as a dark horse in this season’s tournament.
“The Top Four is a free-for-all battle, but it seems Perpetual has an inside track for the fourth spot," said Isla.
Speed will be the key for the Altas, who will parade with an average size.
Vidal, who’s been having a solid preseason performance, is expected to become the new scoring leader of the Altas. He will most likely be delegated to keep a hold of the team that needs new direction. -
