MANILA, Philippines – Nonito “The Filipino Flash” Donaire, Jr. successfully defended his World Boxing Association (WBA) interim super flyweight title after dealing an 8th round technical knockout win over Mexican Hernan “Little Tyson” Marquez in Puerto Rico on Saturday (Sunday in Manila).
According to PhilBoxing.com, Donaire hit Marquez with a “lethal counter left to the jaw.” While the Mexican beat the count, referee Roberto Ramirez halted the fight.
Donaire improved his record to 24 wins (with 16 knockouts) and 1 loss. Marquez, on the other hand, now has 27 wins (with 20 KOs) and 2 losses. The Mexican’s bout with Donaire was his first attempt to win a world title.
The Donaire vs Marquez bout, a supporting main event in “The Challenge,” was held at the Coliseo Jose Miguel Agrelot in Hato Rey.
The main event features Puerto Rican superstar Juan Manuel “Juanma” Lopez and Filipino Bernabe “The Real Deal” Concepcion.
Sonsona fails
Earlier, Filipino Eden Sonsona (21-6, 7 KOs) was knocked out by Puerto Rican Jonathan Oquendo (19-2, with 12 KOs) in their 10-round match.
The Puerto Rican fighter scored the KO at 1:05 of Round 9.
He also sent Sonsona down to the canvass with a “clean right straight” in Round 8.
Sonsona apologized for his loss and said he will make it up in his next fight.
