Even a long two-week layoff couldn’t prevent San Beda’s Garvo Lanete from sustaining his hot-shooting ways.
But Garvo Lanete proved the long respite couldn’t rusty up redhot shooting after he powered last year’s runnerup San Beda to its fourth straight win in as many outings in the 86th NCAA basketball tournament.
With his impressive shooting that preserved San Beda’s immaculate record and solidified its hold at the top spot together with defending champion San Sebastian, Lanete emerged the Accel/FilOil NCAA Press Corps Player of the Week.
The 21-year-old guard buried 22 points he spiked with three triples in the Lions 77-60 rout of the Letran Knights, their archrivals, Wednesday.
Lanete also had five rebounds, two assists and a pair of steals in 30 minutes, enough to snatch the weekly honor supported by Terrilicious meat products like tocino, tapa, hotdog and longanisa.
“He plays good and knows when to step up. He can deliver big shots at any given time, that’s how good this kid is,” said San Beda coach Frankie Lim of his prized veteran.
The Mendiola-based squad seized the initiative early but the Knights threatened late in the third quarter by trimming their deficit to 10 but Lanete took matters into his own hands and poured eight points in the decisive 14-0 run that zapped the fight out of the latter.
The win also gave San Beda its eighth straight victory over the Knights.
Lanete edged rookie transferee Rocky Acidre of Arellano U Chiefs, Raycon Kabigting of Jose Rizal U and San Sebastian’s Calvin Abueva for the weekly citation given by a group of scribes from the country's leading broadsheets and tabloids covering the beat
